Schools across Dubai and the UAE have officially reopened today, Monday, August 31, 2026, marking the start of the 2026-2027 academic year for more than 1.27 million students.
More than 1,180 public and private schools are welcoming students back this year, with several new education policies being introduced alongside the return to classrooms. From shorter school hours during the first week to changes around homework, digital devices and assessments, the new academic year brings several updates for students and parents.
A Phased Start to the New School Year
The return to school is taking place gradually, with reduced hours in effect from August 31 to September 3. The Ministry of Education has introduced the phased schedule to help students ease back into their routines after the summer break.
School days are being shortened by around three hours and 15 minutes for Kindergarten, four hours for Cycle 1 and five hours for Cycles 2 and 3. Schools can also stagger the return of different year groups depending on their readiness.
From Friday, September 4, all students will return to their regular school schedules.
Less Homework for Younger Students
One of the most notable changes this year affects children in Kindergarten through Grade 2.
Students in these year groups will no longer receive traditional homework. Instead, daily home reading will become part of their learning routine, placing greater emphasis on developing literacy skills without adding conventional homework to the school day.
The education system is also expanding Arabic-language assessments, while project-based learning will reach more students across participating schools.
New Approach to Digital Devices
Public schools are also introducing tighter rules around digital device use for Grade 6 students.
For subjects including Arabic, English, mathematics and science, students will use traditional textbooks, notebooks and writing materials rather than digital devices. Technology will continue to feature in subjects such as computer science and artificial intelligence.
The UAE is also placing greater emphasis on AI in education, with teachers receiving advanced training and a unified AI and Technology subject being introduced into the curriculum.
11 New Schools Open Across the UAE
The new academic year also comes with expanded school infrastructure. The Ministry of Education has opened 11 new schools and educational complexes, and deployed around 5,810 school buses to support the return.
Around 8 million textbooks have also been distributed, while more than 26,700 students are joining the public-school system for the first time.
Expect Heavier Dubai Traffic
The return to school has already brought heavier traffic to roads connecting Dubai and Sharjah, with congestion reported on routes such as Mleiha Street and E311.
Dubai Police has increased patrols around school zones and is urging motorists to leave earlier, drive carefully and avoid sudden lane changes. With school buses and parents back on the roads, commuters should expect busier mornings and afternoons during the opening weeks of the academic year.
The first day of school also coincides with the UAE’s Accident-Free Day, which encourages motorists to follow road-safety rules and take extra care around school areas.
Key Dates for 2026–2027
The academic year will continue through three terms, with breaks scheduled throughout the year. The winter break runs from December 14, 2026 to January 1, 2027, with Term 2 beginning on January 4.
Students will then have an Eid Al Fitr break from March 8 to March 12, 2027, followed by the spring break from April 5 to 9. Term 3 begins on April 12, with the academic year scheduled to finish on July 2, 2027.
Schools following international curricula may operate on different calendars, so parents should check directly with their child’s school for exact dates.
A New Chapter for UAE Schools
With more than 1.27 million students returning to classrooms, the 2026–2027 academic year marks another major step in the UAE’s evolving education system. For families, the first week will be about settling into new routines, while students and teachers adjust to updated approaches to homework, technology, assessments and AI.
