Dubai Air Taxi Moves Closer as UAE Certifies World’s First Commercial Vertiport

Dubai air taxi services have taken another major step towards becoming a reality after the UAE certified the world’s first purpose-built commercial vertiport for electric air taxis. The newly approved facility is expected to become the main hub for Dubai’s future air taxi network, bringing the emirate closer to launching commercial operations before the end of the year.

The certification was issued by the UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) following a detailed assessment of the facility’s infrastructure, operational procedures, safety systems, emergency preparedness, and compliance with aviation regulations. The approval marks an important milestone in Dubai’s plans to introduce electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft as part of its future transport network.

World’s first certified commercial vertiport

The newly certified facility, officially registered as VDX, is located near Dubai International Airport and has been developed by Skyports Infrastructure. It is the first purpose-built commercial vertiport in the world to receive regulatory certification, setting a benchmark for future air mobility infrastructure.

The four-storey facility covers around 3,100 square metres and has been designed specifically to support electric air taxi operations. It includes two dedicated take-off and landing pads, rapid charging infrastructure for electric aircraft, and passenger processing areas. Once services begin, the vertiport is expected to handle up to 170,000 passengers every year.

According to the GCAA, the certification reflects the UAE’s ability to create a regulatory framework that supports emerging aviation technology while maintaining high safety standards. Officials described the approval as a significant achievement that strengthens the country’s position in the future of advanced air mobility.

What this means for Dubai’s future air taxi network

While commercial flights have not yet started, the certification brings Dubai one step closer to launching its long-awaited air taxi service. Skyports Infrastructure said the approval confirms that the required infrastructure, operational standards, and regulatory framework are now in place for commercial operations.

VDX will serve as the central hub of Dubai’s planned network, with three additional vertiports currently under development in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). Future locations include Dubai Marina, Dubai Mall, and Palm Jumeirah, creating a network that will connect some of the city’s busiest destinations.

Although authorities have not announced an official launch date alongside the certification, air taxi services are expected to begin before the end of the year. Once operational, the network is expected to offer a faster way to travel across Dubai while supporting the city’s broader vision for smart, sustainable transport.
