Dubai Airport Terminal 1 bridge upgrade completed before peak travel season

The Dubai Airport Terminal 1 bridge upgrade has been completed, increasing capacity by 20 per cent ahead of the busy travel period at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

Dubai Airports said the project was carried out while the airport remained fully operational, with measures in place to minimise disruption to passengers. The upgrade was undertaken after the bridge reached its operational limits due to growing passenger traffic through Terminal 1.

Road expanded from three lanes to four

The project included widening one of the main access roads leading to Terminal 1 from three lanes to four. The additional lane is expected to improve traffic flow and increase vehicle stacking capacity on a key approach route to the terminal.

Dubai Airports completed the work in collaboration with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (DAEP).

A major part of the project involved transporting and installing steel bridge sections measuring up to 42 metres. These works were carried out overnight, with road closures limited to off-peak hours.

Work completed in eight months

According to Dubai Airports, the project was completed within eight months. Graeme Pollock, Head of Programme (Terminal) at Dubai Airports, said the work required coordination between Dubai Airports, RTA, Dubai Police, DAEP, service partners and landside teams.

All critical construction activities were completed while the airport continued normal operations during one of its busiest travel periods.

Dubai Airports said the project supports future passenger growth and forms part of ongoing efforts to improve airport infrastructure and access to Terminal 1.
