Pet Travel from Dubai: Documents and Rules You Need Before Flying

Pet travel from Dubai involves more than just booking a ticket. UAE authorities follow a structured process, and missing an important step can delay or prevent travel.

What documents do you need?

Pets must first meet basic requirements. They need an ISO-standard microchip and up-to-date vaccinations, especially rabies, which is required at least 21 days before travel. Registration with the local authority, such as Dubai Municipality, is also expected, with all records matching the microchip details.

An export permit from the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) is mandatory and must be secured before departure. In addition, a veterinary health certificate is required to confirm the pet is fit to travel. A complete vaccination record and basic owner documents, including a passport copy and travel details, may also be requested.

What else should you check before flying?

Destination rules can vary significantly. While some countries have relatively straightforward entry requirements for pets from the UAE, others may require additional vaccinations, health certificates or quarantine. In certain cases, rabies antibody testing is needed, which can extend preparation timelines.

Airline policies also differ. Some allow small pets in the cabin within specific weight limits, while others only permit travel as checked baggage or cargo.

Planning makes the process smoother. In most cases, pet travel from Dubai comes down to having the right documents, understanding the rules and preparing in advance.
