Emirates Material Futures Studio is giving university students across the UAE an opportunity to see aviation from a completely different perspective. Instead of simply learning about aircraft engineering in the classroom, participants are stepping into Emirates Engineering’s workshops to explore how materials from retired aircraft can be transformed into innovative new products.
The six-week programme, launched by Emirates Engineering’s Upcycling department, combines sustainability, creativity and hands-on learning. It also gives students the chance to work alongside aviation professionals while developing ideas that could shape the future of aircraft material reuse.
A hands-on learning experience
The first edition of Material Futures Studio has welcomed 23 students from Khalifa University, Emirates Aviation University and the University of Sharjah.

The programme began with an introduction to Emirates Engineering’s facilities in Dubai, where students met senior leaders and gained first-hand insight into aircraft maintenance operations. They also toured the airline’s dedicated upcycling workshop to see how materials recovered from retired aircraft are being repurposed into new products rather than discarded.
Over the following six weeks, students will develop their own concepts for reusing aircraft materials with guidance from Emirates Engineering specialists. The programme will conclude with a final showcase, where participants will present prototypes created from upcycled aircraft components.
Turning sustainability into innovation
Material Futures Studio reflects Emirates’ broader commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management.
The airline is currently carrying out one of the aviation industry’s largest fleet retrofit programmes, investing billions of dollars to refurbish 219 Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. As aircraft interiors are upgraded, many of the removed materials are given a second life through Emirates Engineering’s in-house upcycling projects.
Rather than allowing usable materials to go to waste, the engineering team transforms them into practical products that extend their lifespan while reducing environmental impact.
Building the next generation of aviation talent
Beyond sustainability, the programme is designed to strengthen the connection between universities and the aviation industry.
By working directly with experienced engineers, students gain practical insight into aircraft maintenance, product development and creative problem-solving. At the same time, Emirates benefits from fresh ideas and new perspectives that could inspire future innovation.
Material Futures Studio also builds on existing initiatives such as the Aircrafted by Emirates collection, which creates limited-edition bags, luggage and accessories from reclaimed aircraft materials. Another initiative, Aircrafted KIDS, has transformed recovered fabrics into handmade backpacks, with more than 4,000 bags donated to children across 11 countries.
By combining education, sustainability and innovation, Material Futures Studio offers students more than a behind-the-scenes look at aviation. It allows them to help shape how the industry reuses materials, proving that even retired aircraft can have an exciting second chapter.
