As the summer sets in, UAE weather can become unpredictable at times. Residents can expect rising temperatures, partially cloudy conditions and particularly, dusty winds in the days to come, as per the National Center of Meteorology (NCM).

The NCM has forecast rough sea at times in the Arabian Gulf, along with light to moderate winds, which may cause blowing dust.

Temperatures may rise to 43 degrees Celsius in some areas, while coastal regions like Dubai will retain high humidity. Similar weather conditions are expected throughout the upcoming few days

What Are Dusty Winds or Shamals?

A shamal is a hot, dry northwesterly wind that blows over Iraq and the Persian Gulf states, which is strong during the day, but reduces at night. This weather phenomenon can take place several times a year, often in summer.

The wind results in large sandstorms or dust storms. In the UAE, these often come from the Arabian desert areas, and can lead to low visibility while driving, respiratory issues and other significant weather changes, such as higher humidity or temperature decrease.

Tips on Surviving Shamals

Shamals can cause disruption, especially for those living on the outskirts of the city closer to desert regions.

Here are a few precautionary measures for these dust storms:

• Avoid driving into sandy or off-road areas when a dusty wind is blowing
• It is better to stay near the lower range of a speed limit
• Carry a pair of goggles if working or stepping outdoors
• Ideally, move indoors until the wind passes
• Strictly avoid walking through a sandstorm
• If driving, pull over to a safe spot and stay inside the vehicle
