Dubai Pedestrian Bridges: RTA Announces 31 New Crossings by 2030

Dubai pedestrian bridges are set for a major expansion after the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced plans to build 31 new pedestrian bridges and tunnels across the city by 2030.

The project is part of Dubai’s wider mobility strategy and aims to improve road safety, strengthen connectivity between communities, and support the emirate’s growing population. Locations were selected based on factors such as population density, proximity to key destinations, and links to public transport networks.

The new crossings are also expected to encourage more walking and cycling by making it easier and safer for residents to complete short journeys without relying on private vehicles.

Expanding a Safer Pedestrian Network

Dubai has steadily invested in pedestrian infrastructure over the past two decades. According to the RTA, the number of pedestrian bridges and tunnels in the city has increased from 26 in 2006 to 178 in 2025.

The authority has also reported significant improvements in road safety and growing use of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. Walking and cycling trips have both increased in recent years as Dubai continues to expand its network of dedicated routes and crossings.

The latest plan supports the city’s broader goal of promoting sustainable mobility while improving access between residential areas, business hubs, and public transport stations.

Bridges Already Completed and Under Construction

The RTA recently completed three pedestrian and cycling bridges, including crossings on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, and Al Manara Street in Al Quoz Creative Zone.

Three more bridges are currently under construction. These include a 554-metre crossing linking Muhaisnah 1 with Al Twar and Al Mamzar Beach, a 730-metre bridge connecting Liwan with Nad Hessa in Dubai Silicon Oasis, and a new bridge on Al Sukook Street as part of the Al Mustaqbal Street Development Project, which is expected to be completed in early 2027.

The announcement comes as Dubai’s population continues to grow, having passed four million residents and projected to reach 5.8 million by 2040.
