UAE nationals can now renew their Emirates ID up to 1 year before it expires, giving them more flexibility in managing one of their most important official documents. The new rule took effect on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, extending the previous six-month renewal window and making it easier for citizens to plan.
The update was announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) as part of its continued efforts to make government services more convenient and proactive. The longer renewal period also complements an earlier decision that allows UAE passports to be renewed one year before expiry, enabling eligible citizens to renew both documents together in a single transaction.
Renew your Emirates ID and passport at the same time
One of the biggest advantages of the new policy is that citizens whose passports and Emirates IDs expire around the same time can now renew both in a single, integrated process. Instead of completing separate applications, they can handle everything at once, saving time and effort.
According to the ICP, the decision is designed to give citizens greater flexibility by allowing them to choose a renewal date that suits their personal schedules rather than waiting until the final months before expiry. It also supports a smoother customer experience by reducing the number of separate transactions required.
Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the ICP, said the extended renewal period reflects the UAE leadership’s vision of delivering proactive government services that respond to citizens’ needs. He added that the initiative aims to improve the quality of life by offering greater convenience, increasing customer satisfaction, and making essential government services easier to access.

The new renewal window also supports the UAE’s Zero Government Bureaucracy Programme, which focuses on simplifying procedures and creating more connected public services. The Emirates ID remains one of the country’s most important documents, serving as the primary form of identification and providing access to a wide range of government and private sector services through a secure digital network. By allowing renewals up to one year in advance, the latest update gives citizens more control over their personal paperwork while reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to delivering seamless, customer-focused public services.
