Dubai flame trees: Iconic trees helping reduce temperatures by up to 5°C across the city

Dubai flame trees are playing a growing role in shaping the city’s outdoor environment, with officials noting that these iconic trees can reduce ground temperatures by up to 5°C in shaded areas, making public spaces more comfortable during warmer months.

Rather than being seen as ornamental trees, Dubai flame trees are now increasingly recognised as part of the city’s living infrastructure, improving comfort while adding seasonal colour to neighbourhoods and streets.

More than seasonal beauty

Dubai Municipality has highlighted that the value of Dubai flame trees goes far beyond their appearance. Khawla Al Ali from the Agriculture Department explained that the tree’s wide canopy can stretch up to 15 metres, creating large, shaded areas across the city.

That shade, according to official figures, can lower ground temperatures by up to 5°C. In a city where outdoor living is closely tied to the climate for much of the year, this natural cooling effect makes a noticeable difference. Alongside this, Dubai flame trees also support biodiversity and align with wider efforts to expand green spaces and improve urban sustainability.

A familiar part of the city’s landscape

Scientifically known as Delonix regia, the flame tree originates from Madagascar and was introduced to Dubai several decades ago as part of early greening initiatives. It was selected for its resilience in hot climates, broad canopy, and seasonal flowering.

Today, the bright orange-red blooms of Dubai flame trees are closely associated with late spring and early summer, especially in areas such as Jumeirah, Al Safa, Rashidiya, Deira, and Bur Dubai. For many residents, the blooming season has become a quiet marker of the city’s changing rhythm.

A season that reconnects the city with nature

Flame Tree Season has been introduced as a citywide initiative encouraging residents to notice and appreciate the city’s natural landscapes more closely.

Dubai Municipality is also continuing planting efforts, along with community programmes and awareness activities, helping strengthen the presence of Dubai flame trees across the urban environment.
