The Al Taawun Tunnel Project is set to become one of the most important road upgrades on the Sharjah-Dubai commuter corridor, with construction beginning alongside a temporary partial closure of Al Taawun Street from June 13.
For years, Al Taawun roundabout has been one of the busiest and most congested junctions for motorists travelling between Sharjah and Dubai. The new tunnel aims to address this long-standing bottleneck by allowing traffic to move more efficiently through the area, reducing delays and improving connectivity for daily commuters.
What Is the Al Taawun Tunnel Project?
The Al Taawun Tunnel Development Project involves constructing a grade-separated underpass beneath Al Taawun roundabout, a major bottleneck on the Sharjah-Dubai route.

Currently, vehicles from Al Ittihad Road, Al Nahda, Al Khan and the Corniche area converge at the same junction, creating heavy congestion during peak periods. By allowing traffic to move underneath the roundabout without interruption, the tunnel is expected to reduce delays and create smoother journeys for commuters.
Once completed, motorists travelling through the area will no longer need to pass through the roundabout at surface level, helping traffic flow more continuously. The project is also intended to improve connectivity between surrounding residential communities and key road networks.
Why It Matters for Commuters
Al Taawun serves as a major gateway between Sharjah and Dubai and is surrounded by densely populated neighbourhoods, including Al Taawun, Al Nahda, Al Khan and Al Majaz. High traffic volumes, combined with several roads feeding into the same junction, regularly lead to long queues during rush hour.
The tunnel is expected to benefit thousands of residents who travel between the two emirates each day by reducing congestion and improving journey times. It also forms part of Sharjah’s broader efforts to modernise its transport infrastructure and accommodate a growing population.
To facilitate construction, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has introduced temporary traffic diversions:
- Towards Dubai: Vehicles heading to Dubai and Al Nahda Bridge are being redirected via Al Corniche Street.
- Towards Sharjah: Vehicles travelling from Al Nahda Bridge towards Sharjah are being directed onto the newly developed section of Al Taawun Street.
SRTA has advised motorists to follow directional signage, observe temporary traffic arrangements and allow extra travel time while works are underway.
Although construction may cause temporary disruption, the completed Al Taawun Tunnel Project is expected to deliver long-term improvements to one of Sharjah’s busiest commuter corridors, helping to reduce congestion and improve daily travel between Sharjah and Dubai.
