Dubai Airport Baggage Screening Now Takes Just 7 Seconds Per Bag

Dubai Airport baggage screening has become significantly faster, with Dubai Customs introducing advanced inspection technology that can process manually screened bags in around seven seconds.

The upgrade comes as Dubai International Airport prepares for one of its busiest travel periods of the year, helping speed up passenger arrivals while maintaining strict security standards. By combining artificial intelligence, automated inspection systems, and smarter customs processes, authorities aim to make the arrival experience quicker and more efficient for millions of travellers passing through the airport.

New technology is making arrivals faster

Dubai Customs has introduced 19 advanced baggage screening systems and 77 inspection units across Dubai’s airport terminals to improve the speed of customs inspections. Bags selected for manual screening can now be checked in approximately seven seconds, reducing waiting times in the arrivals halls during peak travel periods.

The improvements extend beyond checked baggage. Dubai International Airport is also gradually introducing AI-powered 3D computed tomography (CT) scanners at hand luggage security checkpoints. These scanners create detailed three-dimensional images of bags, allowing security officers to inspect contents without passengers having to remove laptops, liquids, or aerosols.

According to Dubai Airports, the new scanners can increase checkpoint capacity by around 30-40 per cent. The full rollout of the technology is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Alongside these upgrades, Terminal 3 continues to expand its biometric smart corridors, allowing eligible passengers to complete immigration in as little as six seconds without presenting travel documents.

What travellers should know before arriving

Dubai Customs has also introduced digital services designed to reduce processing times after landing. Travellers can use the official iDeclare mobile app before arrival to declare luggage and personal belongings. Completing declarations in advance can reduce customs clearance in the red channel to less than four minutes.

To further improve operations, dedicated animal inspection rooms are being introduced across Terminals 1, 2, and 3. These facilities are intended to speed up veterinary checks for passengers travelling with pets.

Passengers should also be aware of UAE customs regulations before travelling. Gifts intended for personal use are generally exempt from customs duty up to a value of AED 3,000. Cash, gold, jewellery, or other valuables worth more than AED 60,000 must be declared upon arrival. Travellers should also ensure they are not carrying prohibited items, including narcotic drugs, counterfeit currency, or materials that violate UAE laws.

These upgrades are part of Dubai’s broader efforts to enhance the airport experience while ensuring that security remains a top priority during the busy travel season.
