Dubai Digital Twin Platform launched: What it is and how it will shape the city’s future

Dubai Digital Twin Platform has officially been launched, giving the emirate a real-time virtual version of the city that will help authorities plan, test, and improve projects before they are carried out in the real world. Announced by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the initiative marks another major step in Dubai’s digital transformation and smart city ambitions.

Managed by Dubai Municipality, the platform creates a highly detailed 3D digital replica of Dubai by bringing together vast amounts of geographic, infrastructure, and operational data. Instead of relying only on traditional planning methods, government entities can now simulate different scenarios, identify potential challenges, and make better-informed decisions using a virtual model of the city.

The project supports the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to strengthen Dubai’s position as a global hub for innovation, technology, and economic competitiveness.

What is the Dubai Digital Twin Platform?

Think of the Dubai Digital Twin Platform as a living digital copy of the entire city. It continuously combines updated information about buildings, roads, public facilities, infrastructure, and residential areas into one interactive platform.

The scale of the project is significant. More than 195,000 buildings have been recreated as detailed 3D models, alongside over 330,000 public facilities and assets. During the latest phase, Dubai Municipality also converted more than 280,000 infrastructure assets into 3D models.

The platform brings together over 1,500 geospatial data layers and more than 100 two- and three-dimensional applications, giving government departments access to accurate, shared information across multiple sectors.

How will it benefit Dubai?

One of the biggest advantages of the platform is that it allows authorities to test ideas virtually before implementing them on the ground. For example, emergency teams can simulate building evacuations to improve response plans, while engineers can model heavy rainfall to identify areas at risk of flooding and strengthen drainage systems.

The platform will also support urban planning, infrastructure maintenance, asset management, and long-term development by providing a complete picture of the city in one place. This allows different government entities to work from the same up-to-date data, improving collaboration and decision-making.

During the launch, HH Sheikh Hamdan said future-ready cities will be those that build integrated digital systems and embrace innovation. As part of the next phase, Dubai Municipality also signed strategic agreements with Huawei and Al-Futtaim Group to expand the platform’s capabilities and develop new applications.

By combining real-time data, artificial intelligence, and advanced 3D modelling, the Dubai Digital Twin Platform is designed to help Dubai become more efficient, resilient, and prepared for future challenges while enhancing the quality of life for residents.
